Prompted to post by noting a daily total of 51 M4+ quakes across the globe today and none associated with a cluster / swarm that typically results in higher than usual daily totals. As mentioned before, I appreciate M4 is an arbitrary threshold, but 51 unrelated quakes including just about every tectonic setting seems worthy of comment? Strangely comforting to know whatever the reason, it will be nothing to do with what humans are up to just now!
Nope, not a record. It was 52 today, similar wide geographical spread and no very large quakes (only 13 of 52 >M5 and none >M6).
